Turn attrition into attraction with workplace coaching
Making a modest investment in workplace coaching for employees’ improves well-being and gives rise to greater loyalty and improved performance.
There is a very real challenge presenting itself to companies of all sizes, which threatens to unravel the cohesiveness and productivity of teams. McKinsey suggests that “. . . employees crave investment in the human aspects of work. Employees are tired, and many are grieving. They want a renewed and revised sense of purpose in their work. They want social and interpersonal connections with their colleagues and managers. They want to feel a sense of shared identity. Yes, they want pay, benefits, and perks, but more than that they want to feel valued by their organizations and managers. They want meaningful—though not necessarily in-person—interactions, not just transactions.”
More so now than ever (and especially for Generation X), work-life balance is an essential factor in reaching high levels of satisfaction with life, where experiencing meaning and purpose are placed firmly at forefront of mind in both team efforts and personal endeavours. Further, psychological well-being has a key factor that affects levels of satisfaction with life, that being positive relationships with others. Turning up and being able to operate with authenticity significantly reduces internal conflict and frees the individual to better contribute to other members of the team’s aspirations and those of the team and organisation as a whole.
A recent article in Harvard Business Review (sponsored by ICF) stated “Organizations integrating coaching into organizational effectiveness see improvements in retention, teamwork, relationships, and job satisfaction” and suggests that companies that embrace coaching “. . . are likely better prepared to quickly adapt, manage workforce priorities and support employees’ physical and emotional well-being”.
“Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential” is how The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching. Coaching raises self-awareness and creates change through intentional choices. It is in those moments of choice when the coach/client partnership holds great value to build a plan that moves toward outcomes.
Coaching is as relevant to Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs / SMEs) as it is for any other organisation. Making a modest investment in employees’ well-being gives rise to greater loyalty, improved performance and tackling burnout.
